A birth doula is defined as a professional support person trained in the needs of the mother and family during pregnancy and childbirth. The doula offers non-judgmental support, guidance, evidence based education and practical hands-on support during childbirth including comfort measures. Doula originates from the Greek word meaning woman servant. A birth doula recognizes the profound impact of childbirth on the mother.
As a Doula I:
Recognize that the entire process of labor and birth is an experience the mother will remember all her life
Have knowledge of the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor
Assist the mother in preparing for and carrying out her plans for birth
Stay with the woman throughout labor
Provide emotional support, physical comfort measures and an objective viewpoint, as well as helping the woman get the information she needs to make informed decisions.
Facilitate communication between the laboring woman, her partner and her clinical care providers
Perceives her role as nurturing and protecting the woman’s memory of the birth experience
Allow the woman’s partner to participate at his/her comfort level
Evidence published by the Cochrane Review on the benefits of having a Doula found:
* 12% Increase on having a spontaneous vaginal birth
* 9% Decrease in the use of any pain medications
* 28% Decrease in the risk of having a Cesarean Delivery
* 31% Decrease in the use of Pitocin
* 14% Decrease in the risk of newborns being sent to the special care nursery
* 34% Decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with your birth experience
